Ami: There is something I don’t understand about Purim. It’s so different than any other Chag. In all our festivals, we feel the spirituality in the air, mainly because certain secular actions are prohibited. But on Purim – nothing is prohibited. Some people even go to work on Purim. If there is no work prohibition prohibited on Purim – what makes it different than any other day?”

In what sense is Purim different than other days?

Ami: There is something I don’t understand about Purim. It’s so different than any other Chag. In all our festivals, we feel the spirituality in the air, mainly because certain secular actions are prohibited. But on Purim – nothing is prohibited. Some people even go to work on Purim. If there is no work prohibition prohibited on Purim – what makes it different than any other day?”

1. Midrash Shochar Tov

All the festivals will become void, whereas Purim will never become void.

Yisrael: Why cancel the Chagim in the future? Why will Purim not be cancelled?

2. Talmud Bavli, Shabbat 88a

‘And they stood under the mount’:  R. Abdimi b. Chama b. Chasa said: This teaches that the Holy One, blessed be He, overturned the mountain upon them like an [inverted] cask, and said to them,'If you accept the Torah, good; if not, there shall be your burial.' R. Acha b. Yaakov observed: This furnishes a strong protest against the Torah. (Rashi: For if God calls them to be judged, asking- why didn’t you fulfill what you accepted, they have an answer- that they accepted it by coercion)  Said Raba, Yet even so, they re-accepted it in the days of Achashverosh, for it is written, [the Jews] confirmed, and took upon them [etc.]:  [i.e.,] they confirmed what they had accepted long before

·        What does the Midrash mean by telling us that Bnei Yisrael were forced to accept the Torah?

·        In what sense did Bnei Yisrael re-accept the Torah in the days of Achashverosh? How do we accept the Torah on Purim?

3. Meshech Chochma, Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk

Hashem had revealed Himself clearly and miraculously to Am Yisrael, in a way that their natural freedom of choice ceased, and their soul was overwhelmed by encountering the Divine presence.  This had created an atmosphere in which they were virtually forced to obey Hashem just as the Angels do, and they witnessed that the existence of all creatures depends solely on the acceptance of the Torah.

·        How does the Meshech Chochma explain the fact the Bnei Yisrael’s freedom of choice ceased?

·        According to the Meshech Chochma, the miraculous manner by which the Torah was given limited Bnei Yisral’s freedom of choice. Try to think - When did Bnei Yisrael accept the Torah in a normal manner – without any miracles? What is the advantage of the accepting of the Torah in such a manner?

·        What, according to the Midrash, is the message of independence of Purim?

4. Talmud Bavli, Chulin 139b

How do we derive Esther from the Torah? in the Torah it says (Devarim 31:18) “Anochi haster asteer”, I am the Lord who will surely conceal. (“asteer”, I will hide, is written with the same letters as ‘Esther’.)

·        What does the Midrash mean by implying that the source of Esther in the Torah is in Hashem’s hiding?

·        In what sense is Hashem hiding from us in the story of the Megilla? What does that mean?

5. Maharal, Or Chadash

Because in the future, Israeli independence will be regarded of first importance, and the exiting  of Egypt secondary importance, therefore it is possible to say that all the festivals that are celebrated in remembrance of the exiting of Egypt, will be void, as they are not of main importance. But rather Purim, which is not celebrated in memory of the exiting of Egypt will not be void.

·        How does the Maharal explain the canceling of the Chagim in the future?

·        Why, according to the Maharal, will Purim not be cancelled? What is the difference between Purim and the other Chagim?

6. Rav Kook, Olat Reiyah 440

The reason why labor is permitted on Purim is that there is no contradiction on this day between the material world and the spiritual world, and therefore usually on Yom Tov, where the goal is to take pleasure in God’s presence it’s impossible  to accomplish that while dealing with worldly matters… This is not so on Purim, when the curse transformed into blessing, even by dealing with a secular work we can find the light of sacredness

·        What, according to Rav Kook, is the difference between Purim and the other Chagim?

·        Based on the sources studied above, in what sense is Purim an expression of independence?
