אני זוכר כיצד לימדה אותי אמא לקרוא הללו לראשונה. בן שש הייתי וביקשתי ממנה שתקנה לי שעון.

"אין לי כסף לשעון", אמרה.

"אין לך אבא, זיידה, יש לך רק אמא ומה שאני יכולה אני אקנה לך. אוכל לאכול יש לך, בגד ללבוש ואתה לא הולך יחף בלי נעליים", ואח"כ התרככה, הוליכה אותי בידי החוצה ואמרה: "אתה לא צריך שעון, זיידה, תראה כמה שעונים יש בעולם". היא הראתה לי את צילו של האקליפטוס שבגודלו, בכיוונו, בצינתו אמר תשע בבוקר. את העלעלים האדומים של הרימון שאמר אמצע מרץ, את השן שהתנדנדה בפי ואמרה שש שנים, ואת הקמטים הקטנים שבזוית עיניה שריצדו ואמרו ארבעים.

"אתה רואה זיידה, ככה אתה בתוך הזמן. אם יקנו לך שעון אתה תהיה רק לצידו".
