Resource Contents

“When the Shark and the Fish First Met” - Gilad Shalit
כשהכריש והדג נפגשו לראשונה – גלעד שליט

Before reading the book, share a few thoughts with your students:

ü      When Gilad Shalit was 11 years old he wrote this story, a school project.
ü      During the first months of Gilad Shalit's captivity his parents published this story.
ü      Different Israeli artists illustrated each scene from the story.
ü      Gilad Shalit has been in captivity since June 2006. This book is one way to keep Gilad in the hearts and minds of as many people as possible.

The book is also a You-tube video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0rb_SmjUKc

After reading the book

Discussion questions:

  • Did things change after the shark and the fish tell their parents about their new friend?
  • Why are the shark and the fish more open to being friends than their parents?
  • Is it possible for sharks and fish to play together in peace?
  • What do you think the shark and fish could represent?
  • Is this a happy story? Is this a "happily ever after" ending?
  • Is it possible to be friends with someone who doesn't want to be your friends?

After this short discussion introduce the Illustration Activity:

An English translation of the book is provided in this education packet. The pages include space for students to draw their own interpretation and illustration of the story.

Students can work as individuals or in small groups. At the end of the activity you will have illustrated the entire book (a total of 8 pages).

Further discussion points:

·        Why is it important to share Gilad's story?

·        Why is every picture in the story different? Couldn't the artists have made it look the same? {Discuss the importance of community, sharing ideas and different kinds of people working together for a common goal – to bring captive soldiers home}.
