לפני הרבה הרבה שנים חי לו בארץ יהודה פלאח עני, ולפלאח היו שתי נשים. את האחת מהן הוא אהב מאוד מאוד, ואת השניה הוא לא כל כך אהב. שתי הנשים הללו ילדו לו שני בנים. הפלאח פינק את האישה האהובה, וכל יום היה מגיש לה ולבנה חמאת בקר, גבינות, וחלב. לאשתו השניה ולבנה נתן רק שמן זית ולחם. בנה של האישה האהובה נראה שמן, בריא, עם לחיים ורודות, ובנה של האישה השנייה היה רזה רזה, אבל חזק.

בכל פעם ששני הילדים רבו זה עם זה, תמיד ניצח הילד של האישה הלא כ"כ אהובה. יום קיץ אחד הגיע בנה של האישה האהובה אל אימו בוכה, אפו זב דם וכתם גדול וחום סביב עינו הימנית. "מה קרה לך, בני?" התרגשה אימו, "שוב היכה אותך הבן שלה הרזה והחלשלוש? תראה איך אתה נראה-שמן בריא, וחזק; אתה לא יכול להחזיר לו פעם אחת וללמד אותו לקח?!"

"לא אמא", התייפח הבן, "הוא פשוט חזק ממני". האם לא הבינה זאת, היא ניגשה אל הזקן החכם שבכפר, ושאלה אותו: "איך זה יכול להיות שבני, האוכל אוכל משובח, כמו חמאת בקר, נכנע לבן הפצלוח של צרתי, שאוכל רק שמן זית ולחם?". זקן הכפר, שהיה חכם מאוד, חייך ואמר: "חמאת בקר טובה ליופי וללחיים ורודות, ואילו שמן זית- אין טוב ממנו לחיזוק הגוף והעצמות.

ולמן אותו היום קיבלו שתי הנשים רק שמן זית ולחם.
