פני שלוש שנים ירדתי מהארץ בשליחות ממלכתית. היה נחמד. ישבנו בסן פרנסיסקו על המים עם עוד משפחות נחמדות של יורדים כמונו (קונסוליה, נציגי משרד-התיירות, נספחים מסחריים, משתלמים ופוסט דוקטורנטים). לא רבים, כ- 300 יורדים ממוסדים על נשיהם וטפם. היו שם גם פליטים לרוב, כלומר, כאלה שסתם עזבו את הארץ, בלי תימוכין מימסדיים. אבל איתם לא היה לנו קשר. היינו יורדים עם עקרונות.

לא מכבר שבנו לארץ. כן, תושבים חוזרים על כל המתלווה לכך (שלושה ליפטים). היתה לנו טיסה נפלאה ב'אל על' בנמל התעופה קיבלו אותנו עשרות בני משפחה וידידים מריעים, מצאנו בית צבוע, נקי, מלא פרחים ושיפעת מזון וחברים מוסיפים לבוא עד עצם היום הזה ובידם תקרובת מפרי הארץ.

למען האמת, באחרונה הדלדל זרם המבקרים. הכל החל לפני שבוע. למעשה הסימנים התרבו מאז אותו ערב חם. ישבו אצלנו כעשר משפחות (ענבים, עוגות, גלידות, פרחים). רצינו להראות שיקופיות, אבל כולם דווקא לחצו לקבל מידע על אשרות, רשיון עבודה, שכר דירה וחינוך לילדים בארה"ב. היה רגע של שתיקה ואז גנח מישהו וחברו מילמל: "איזו מדינה, איזו מדינה"...

אינני יודע למה עשיתי את זה, אני לא מבין עד היום איך זה קרה, אבל נפלט לי משהו כמו: "נהדר לי בארץ. יש לי כאן חברים נפלאים, אני מסדר עניינים במהירות הבזק, הארץ מלאת אנרגיה ועניין, אני מאושר לחזור ארצה, הילדים מאושרים, הים נהדר, כיף..."

הייתי ממשיך עם ההשתפכות המטופשת הזו עוד ועוד, אך המבטים הקרירים של החברים עצרו בעדי. זה היה מאוחר מדי. מישהו מילמל: "צריך לקום מחר מוקדם" והכל עזבו בזה אחר זה.

"לא כל מה שחושבים צריך להגיד", נתנה בי האשה מבט צונן. "מחר כבר נצטרך ללכת לקניות".

אכן, למחרת פסקו הביקורים, המקרר התרוקן ומלאי העוגות אזל. באותו ערב פתחנו טלוויזיה בפעם הראשונה והשר מודעי נכנס לנו ישר לסלון. הוא דיבר על "משבר ערכים העובר על המדינה". מראייניו הכנועים הסכימו איתו. הן לא שאלו אותו מתי החל משבר הערכים הזה ומי גרם לו. אתמול החל להסתמן שיפור במצבנו החברתי. פגשנו ברחוב ידידים ותיקים. הם מיד שאלו, כמו כולם: "משוגעים, למה חזרתם?" ואנחנו למודי ניסיון, עיקמנו את האף ואמרנו: "אכלנו אותה, נגמרה השליחות. איזו מדינה. תן לנו הזדמנות ומחר אנחנו חוזרים".

פני הידידים אורו. בערב הם קפצו לביקור. הביאו עוגה ופרחים. ישבנו וקיטרנו על המדינה עד אור הבוקר.
