Leadership

Discussion for Zach

Goals: The chanichim will leave this peula inspired to step up as leaders in their communities and schools. They will gain knowledge of different leadership qualities and how these can be used in positive ways, but also in negative ways. They will be able to apply these leadership traits in different hadracha and life scenarios.

Sicha:

Each group takes a different story from tanach and looks at how the leaders handled themselves in that situation. Ask the chanichim: What situation were they dealing with? What leadership trait did they use? Is this a good trait or a bad trait? Could it be used in a positive or negative way? Did the leader solve the situation? Give a parallel example of this situation in real life. What would you have done in that situation? Would you have acted differently?

Examples:   Korach and the rebellion (and Moshe’s response)

                    Aharon and Egel Hazahav

                   Esther and Mordechai

                   Pinchas when he kills Zimri

Discuss as group:  What different traits were presented? What were each groups conclusions? What would we conclude are the 3 most important traits?

“Bemakom she’eyn ish, hishtadel lehiyot ish” – Pirkei Avot

What does this quote mean? What are examples of voids where we have to step up, problems where we have to solve? Think of examples in community/ school/ youth group….

Conclusion:  Machal is microcosm of an Am, as a nation we are supposed to be mamlechet cohanim and goi kadosh - an autonomous nation in our homeland. To do this we need leaders. People who speak up and have a rosh gadol, and take initiative.

Many times in our lives situations will arise where we can step up and right a wrong, make a difference, take initiative and change the world. This happens a lot in Hadracha, in relationships with friends and most importantly as you take your roles as members and future leaders of Am Israel.

Korach and the rebellion

An amazing speaker, was able to rally the people behind him. Could control a crowd.

Acts like has people’s interest’s in mind – “Why should Moshe and Aaron be holier then anyone else? We should all be equal!” But really had other motives and wanted to get power for himself.

Was the big speaker, everyone listened to him (Picture the US election speeches, with the big signs behind him and the lights, he run a show). But Hitler was also an excellent speaker and had a huge following.

Is it important to be a great speaker? Moshe was an “anav”, humble, couldn’t speak so well (that was his complaint to Hashem at the beginning as to why he shouldn’t be leader) but still was also hands down, Bnei Israel’s greatest leader.

Hadracha scenario: Ur an eidah alef counseller, theres a thunderstorm, the kids are going nuts, you have to calm them down.

Aharon and Egel Hazahav

Aharon compromises with the ppl when they want to make the egel. Keeps doing things to delay them (go collect gold, build a mizbeach, we’ll do it tomorrow) until Moshe comes back and the problem is fixed. Good problem solving, diplocmacy. Patience, doesn’t lose temper.

He could have yelled no. But Chur did that and was killed by people (midrash)!

Have to know when to compromise. But did Aharon compromise too much? He let the ppl get away with too much until they did the sin of Avodah Zara.

Hadracha: Your eidah alef kids keep bugging you to let them skip a peula and sleep. Do you give in?

Real Life: Your friend keeps asking you for ur homework to copy.

Esther and Mordechai

Esther shows bravery by going into castle to face king. Risks her life for am Israel. Self-sacrifice.

Mordechai stands up for his beliefs. Won’t bow down. Rallies ppl to pray when Am Israel is in danger.

Go to ur principal and ask to change something about school, etc….

Pinchas when he kills Zimri

Shows zeal. It can be good or bad. Here saw a wrong and “righted it” but in a vioent manner. Not everyone was sure he was rite, Hashem has to announce it.

The Taliban – bad religious zeal. Person who assinated Yitchak Rabin – bad zeal.

But zeal can be positive also. Judah Maccabee starts rebellion  to free jews- good zeal.

Hadracha: see two kids fighting. Do you go crazy and knock the kids apart. Or punch one of the kids? Or do you try and talk to them?
