Resource Contents
Chanukah- Fighting the Culture A. Split the chanichim into two groups. Ask each group to make up their own ???? 1. A game that only them can understand its rules. 2. Find 5 words that we usually use, and change their meaning to something else, only your team can understand. Each group needs to keep their rules a secret. Each group will start to play its game and use their words. After 2 minutes, take out 1 chanich/a From each group and switch between them. Now, you have two chanichim that not in their original group, and don’t know the other group rules. Ask the two chanichim to keep their original group rules and not participate with the other group. After 5 minutes, choose another 2 chanichim and switch them too. Ask them to keep their own rules. After two minutes, ask them to try as much as they can to participate and to learn the other group rules. Play for another 5 minutes. B. Show the chanichim the pictures of the story, and ask them to make a story for this pictures. Give everybody a chance to express him/ herself. Then tell them the real story. Explanation: In Chanukah we celebrate the holiday of light, but we need to remember the Macabim didn’t fight only the Syrian Greeks but also their cultures. On those days some of the Jews thought that the Greeks culture is more attractive and they start acting according it, and in the same time they lost their own individual culture. We need to remember that we have also the same problem today. Especially when we live among the other nations. Although there are a lot of temptation around us, we need to make all the efforts to keep our culture because it was made for us and we survived as a nation for 2000 years thanks to that.
